304 stainless steel, also known as UNS S30400, is made with a special mix of materials. It includes 0.08% Carbon, 0.75% Silicon, 2.0% Manganese, 0.030% Sulfur, and 0.045% Phosphorous. This steel type, according to ASTM A312 / A213 SS TP 304 standards, has strong physical properties: it has a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa, a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa, a maximum Rockwell B hardness of 92, and a maximum Brinell hardness of 201. Chromium is the key element that makes steel “stainless” by forming a protective layer on the steel surface. No other element can replace chromium in this role.
