Inconel 600 is a nickel-chromium alloy known for its excellent resistance to oxidation at high temperatures. It’s also resistant to environments containing carburizing and chlorides. This alloy can be used from very cold temperatures up to 2000°F (1093°C). The high nickel content helps it resist corrosion in various conditions, both organic and inorganic.
The nickel in Inconel 600 also makes it highly resistant to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking and alkaline solutions. The chromium in the alloy offers resistance to sulfur compounds and oxidizing environments, though it doesn’t do well in hot, concentrated nitric acid. In neutral and alkaline salt solutions, Inconel 600 remains mostly unaffected and is used in some caustic settings. It also withstands steam and steam mixtures with air and carbon dioxide.
Common uses for Inconel 600 include producing titanium dioxide (chloride route), synthesizing perchlorethylene, manufacturing vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), and handling magnesium chloride. Additionally, it’s used in the chemical and food industries, for heat treating, in phenol condensers, soap manufacturing, and for storing vegetable and fatty acids.
